Chapter 18: The Debt
"Do not call her phone," Torben said again, and I put my hand on the door and pushed it open.
He turned in the corridor with the phone at his ear.
His face did something I had never seen it do.
It went completely open.
"I'll call you back," he said, and ended the call.
I stood in my paper gown with an IV line taped to my arm.
"Say it again," I said. "The part about the Stroud debt."
"Halley, you should be in bed."
"I should be a lot of things."
He didn't move.
Then he told me, in order, the way he told everything, without dressing it.
The night of the stairs, he had gone home and called his fund manager at two in the morning.
Stroud Hotels owed its lenders four hundred million dollars, and two of those lenders were tired of waiting.
He had bought their paper by sunrise.
All of it.
"So Lance's family has answered to you for three months," I said.
