Chapter 7: The Dock

Lance walked up the drive with his hands out, palms open.

"Margot," he said. "Thank God. I've been calling you all morning."

"I turned my phone off."

"Baby, whatever she told you, she's unwell. She's been stalking me since the announcement."

Margot didn't move.

I stepped down beside her, one hand on the rail, and every bruise I owned lit up.

"Hello, Lance," I said.

He saw my belly in daylight, and for one second his face went blank.

Then he arranged it into pity.

"Halley, honey. You're confused. I'm worried about you. Let me take you to someone who can help."

"Like the clinic on Michigan Avenue?"

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Eight a.m. Paid for. Nobody will ever know."

He flinched at his own words.

I had said them softly, in the voice he'd used, and Margot's head turned toward him.

"I watched the stairwell tape," she said.

Lance's mouth opened.

"Margot."

"Four times."

"It's not what it looks like. She came at me. She was hysterical, and I was holding her back."

"With both hands on her chest?"

He stopped.

Margot took off her left glove, and I thought she would pull off the ring.

Instead, she put the glove back on.

"I'm going to think," she said. "Don't follow me."

She walked past him to the gate, where a small grey car was parked, and she drove away without looking back.

Lance watched her go.

When he turned, the pity was gone.

"You stupid girl," he said, very low. "You have no idea what you've done."

"Get off this property."

"Make me."

"I'll make you."

Torben's black SUV came through the gate at that moment and stopped across the drive, blocking the sedan.

I had texted him one word from the porch.
