Chapter 14: The Madam Calls
Madam Gwak had a folding stool brought out, and a brazier, and a pot of tea.
She sat in the middle of the villa yard in the rain, while one of her blades held an oiled-paper umbrella over her head.
She looked like somebody's aunt.
Her rings flashed when she poured.
Kang-sik stood behind her with his left sleeve cut off at the shoulder and a white bandage under it.
He smiled at Ra-on with his whole bad face.
"I won't ask you to sit," Madam Gwak said.
"I can see the house is in disorder."
Dong-ju stood on the porch with the practice sword in both hands, his knuckles bone-white.
Ryeo-won walked up beside Ra-on, and his robe was still soaked and open.
"Madam Gwak," he said pleasantly.
"You came a long way for a cup of tea."
"Master Mok."
"I have never had the honor."
"I hear you've taken my servant into your household."
"I hear you've been generous with him."
"He cooks," Ryeo-won said.
She laughed, a small, delicate sound.
"I have come on a matter of business," she said.
"A contract was taken in my Hall."
"It was paid in full, in advance, by a client in good standing."
"The Hall's name rests on contracts being finished."
"That is all we are."
"The client has changed his mind," said Ryeo-won.
"I'm sure he has."
"But the Gray Heron Hall does not give refunds."
"If we did, every old man with a bad conscience would hire a knife and then regret it."
She smiled at Ra-on.
"Magpie holds the tally."
"He is bound by the law he was raised in."
