Chapter 16: Dong-ju's Fist
Dong-ju found out at breakfast.
Ra-on had not planned to tell him that way.
He came down the ladder at dawn, and Ryeo-won came in barefoot with his sleeves rolled, and the red welts showed on his wrists.
Dong-ju looked at the welts.
Then he looked at both their faces.
He set down his spoon.
"What did you do?" he said.
"Dong-ju."
"What did you both do?"
Ra-on had thought all night about how to tell him.
In the end he told it flat, like a report.
He left out nothing and softened nothing, and the grove came last.
He watched the boy's face change by degrees, from confusion to fear to something Ra-on had never seen on it.
Dong-ju stood up.
He walked around the table.
He hit his master across the face with a closed fist.
It was a clumsy punch, a boy's, with all his thin weight behind it.
Ryeo-won's head turned with it, and he did not lift his hands.
