Chapter 18: The Ledger Lies

Ra-on went down the ladder in a tunic and no boots.

The fire had the plum tree to the first fork already, and it made a sound.

Dong-ju was on the roof of the kitchen with a bucket in each hand, screaming for water.

Ryeo-won came out of the loft behind Ra-on with the Crane already drawn.

"How many?" he said.

"I don't know."

"Listen."

Ra-on listened, and under the roar and the sparrows he heard a boot scrape on the roof tiles over the gate.

"Left," said Ryeo-won, and Ra-on threw a knife without looking.

A man in grey fell off the gate with the knife in his thigh.

After that it was all the nights in the Hall rolled into one.

There were six of them, the lowest rank, the ones who ran errands and cut ropes.

They came over the wall with torches and short blades.

Ra-on took the first at the well, low, with the wire across his shins, and put a blade through his shoulder and left him screaming.

Ryeo-won was a pale line moving through the firelight.

He did not hurry.

He stood in the middle of the yard and let them come to him.

Each one met the edge of the Crane at exactly the place he had decided.

Dong-ju poured a bucket on a man's head from the roof and then dropped the bucket on him.

"Sorry!" he yelled.

They broke in less than a minute.
