Chapter 10: The Knife

The guard held the knife up to the candles so everyone in the doorway could see it.

Its hilt was scorched black. A notch had been cut in the pommel, the way the Fallen mark their blades.

"This is the twin of the one that cut the Lady Odette," he said. "Found in the prisoner's trunk."

Cassian stood up from the bed.

He had pulled his shirt straight, and he looked like what he was, the Lord of Ravenmoor, with nothing in his face at all.

"Captain," he said. "Whose tower is this?"

"Yours, my lord."

"Whose prisoner?"

"Yours."

"Then evidence found in my custody stays in my custody until the Trial of Return." He held out his hand. "Law of the keep, section nine. Give it to me."

The captain's jaw worked.

He had no answer, because the law said what Cassian said it did. He put the knife in his Lord's palm.

"The Elder will want to hear of this," he said.

"I'm sure he will."

Odette appeared at the head of the stairs in her nightdress with a shawl around her shoulders and her silver cup in her hand.

She took in the room in one look.

The trunk, the knife, the Lord and the prisoner on the rumpled bed.

Her face went very still.

Then it opened into perfect distress.

"Oh, Cassian," she said. "She's been hiding it here all along."

"Has she?"

"It's the same make. It must be."
