Chapter 18: The Range Alpha
"Who are you?" Mathias said.
"The alpha of the Iron Range pack." The big man smiled wider. "We haven't met. I've been up north, minding my own territory, until I heard there was an unsealed heiress at the border."
"She's sealed."
"She's marked. It's not the same." He looked at my wrist. "You bit her on a border stone, Crowe, in front of two packs and no founder's stone. The old law says a claim holds only when it's sealed at a founder's stone by the next full moon."
"That's a month away."
"Until then, any alpha may challenge for her."
My mouth had gone dry.
"I'm standing right here," I said.
"So you are." His eyes went over me, slowly, and stayed too long on the hair. "That's the pleasant thing about you being back in your own body, Miss Redfern. It's a good one."
Mathias stepped between us.
He did it without hurry, and the Range alpha's six wolves all shifted their weight.
"Say what you want," Mathias said.
"The Redfern timber. The ridge, the mill, the river rights." He spread his hands. "And I'd take a pretty wife along with them. But I'll settle for the land. I'll fight you for the claim, Crowe, at sundown in three days, at the river ring. If I win, she's mine and so is the seat. If you win, I go home."
"No," I said.
"It's not up to you," the Range alpha said, and he sounded genuinely sorry. "It's law. Your man can refuse, and then the claim lapses and I take you to the Range tonight. Or he can fight."
