Chapter 10: The Pie
Dexter came to the diner on Friday with a pie.
He walked in at the height of the lunch rush in a camel coat, carrying a bakery box in both hands.
Every head in the diner turned.
"Hi, everyone," he said, with a sad little smile. "I'm Quinn's brother. I just wanted to say thank you for taking such good care of him."
A woman at the counter put her hand on her chest.
"Oh, honey," she said. "He's in the back."
I was at the sink with my sleeves rolled up, rinsing coffee mugs.
I saw him through the pass window.
He set the box on the counter, accepted a hug from the woman, and shook the hand of an old trucker who had no idea who he was.
Norman came out of the kitchen with his arms folded.
"Mr. Hendry," Dexter said warmly. "I owe you an apology for the other day. I was rude. Can I have five minutes with my brother?"
Norman looked at me through the pass.
I nodded.
I had already slipped my phone into the front pocket of my apron, with the voice recorder running.
I'd started it the second I saw the camel coat.
Dexter came through the swinging door.
The change was immediate. His shoulders dropped, and the sad little smile came off.
"Nice place," he said. "I like the apron."
"What do you want, Dexter?"
"I want you to stop." He pulled a stool out and did not sit on it. "Mom has been crying for three days. Dad stopped answering my texts. You are tearing the family in half over a banking mistake."
"It wasn't a mistake."
"It was a misunderstanding."
