Chapter 12: The Duffle Bag

Hallie came back at ten that night.

I heard the knock at the kitchen door while I was drying the last of the mugs.

She stood on the step in her green parka with her hands jammed in her pockets.

Behind her, a tall boy in a school hoodie stood half in the dark.

"Can I come in?" Hallie asked.

"Norman's already gone up."

"Good."

She came in and shut the door and looked at the floor.

"I was wrong to say that to you," she said. "You didn't put me on a list. Dexter did."

"You weren't wrong to be scared."

"I wasn't scared of you." She scuffed her boot against the tile. "I was scared of the dean. And I took it out on you."

"Okay."

"I'm going to the integrity office on Monday," she said. "By myself. I'm going to say I bought it, and I'll take whatever they give me. I'd rather say it than wait for it to be said."

"I'll go with you, if you want."

"I don't want," she said. "But thank you."

I nodded.

She took a breath.

"I'm still coming tomorrow," she said. "To the dinner. Norman can drive me."

"Why?"

"Because I walked past you in that dining hall," she said. "I'm not doing it twice."

I looked at the boy in the shadows.

"Who's that?"

"Dexter's roommate. The one who said you looked like a ghost." She gestured. "He wants to tell you something. I told him he could tell you in person."
