Chapter 18: The Pin
Darian came down the stair behind the mage, whistling.
He had taken off his rings, and I noticed it.
"Sister," he said. "Visiting hours are over."
"Your guard took my coin."
"He took mine first." He leaned on the wall. "Mage, explain the situation. She likes things explained."
The mage stopped three steps above me, polite as a tailor.
"The key is in your blood, Highness. It cannot be moved by a will, but a new binding can be cut with a fresh drop, and the old one can be written over."
"I could make your brother the master of Garrick Marsden, in his own right, tonight."
"A little pin, a little vellum. It would hardly hurt."
"And after that I'm no use to you," I said.
"After that you go to the Sisters, as planned. Alive and quiet."
Darian shrugged.
"I'm not a monster. I'm practical."
Behind me the cell bars rang.
