Chapter 20: The Trial
The captain of the soldiers stopped his horse just short of the ring of Ashby people and looked at the spears in his own hands.
He was young, and he had clearly been told this would be easy.
"Princess Sigrid," he called. "The Regent commands you to come with me."
"The Regent commands a good many things," I said.
I took the tithe case from Nan and held it against my chest.
"Statute of Burned Lands, fourth clause. The accused may call witnesses from the land he is charged with burning, and no judgment falls until they are heard in open court."
"My husband has called four hundred."
"They are in your city tonight by law, and the day is up at sunrise."
"Lay a hand on one of them and tell the lords why."
The captain's gaze slid over the children and the old women and the man in the leather coat, who had picked up an iron tent peg.
