Chapter 17: The Parking Garage

Duncan's POV

Hannah dressed while I was still on the phone with the bank, and she said one thing before I left.

"I want her in the room," she said. "Not in a cell, not in Mexico. In the room, where everyone can see her face."

"She has two million dollars and a head start."

"Then find her before she spends the head start."

I had promised to stay out of it until she said.

She had just said.

I kissed her at the door, once, short, and her hand flattened against my chest.

Then I went down to the car.

The man at the bank sent me her phone's last location before it went dark.

It was the long-term garage at O'Hare, fourth level, on the north side.

I drove there with the radio off and my hands tight on the wheel.

I knew that garage.

Two years ago I had walked every level of it looking for a blue Honda that was not there.

This time the car was on the fourth level, a grey rental with its trunk open, and Camilla was lifting a small suitcase into it.

She wore jeans and a plain white shirt, with her hair tied back, and no makeup.

I pulled the sedan across the end of the row and shut off the engine.

She straightened and turned and saw me, and her face did something I had not seen it do in four years.

It gave up.

"Dunc," she said.

"Don't."

"I knew it'd be you. I told myself it'd be the police, and I knew it'd be you."

I got out and walked toward her.

She did not run, and she did not reach for the car door.

"The investors' money," I said.

"It's in my account. I haven't touched it."
