Chapter 13: Off
Fumika didn't think.
She put her wrist to her mouth and bit the cord.
It was silk, plaited tight, and it didn't give.
It burned her lips. She could taste smoke on it, and something like iron.
Ibuki was on both knees now, his hand braced on the grass, blood dripping from his chin.
"Knife," she said. "Someone give me a knife."
Nobody heard her over the clapping.
A servant in palace livery stood a few steps off with a tray of sliced peaches.
There was a little silver fruit knife on the tray.
Fumika took it.
The servant made a noise of protest and she didn't hear what it was.
She got the blade under the cord against the inside of her wrist and sawed.
It cut her skin. She didn't care.
The silk parted strand by strand.
Then it snapped, and the two ends sprang apart and fell on the grass.
The burning stopped.
Ibuki gasped.
It was a huge gasp, the kind a drowning man makes when he breaks the surface.
His back arched.
Colour came up into his face, all at once.
The grey went out of his horns from the roots upward, and they were black again, glossy as lacquer.
