Chapter 20: Bark
The eggs were black on the bottom and raw on top.
Tate stood over the stove with a spatula and a look of total betrayal.
"This is a conspiracy," he said.
Judah sat at the cabin table with his tape-mended glasses on his nose.
"It's a cast-iron skillet on a wood stove," he said. "You can't put it on high."
"I can gut a buck in four minutes," Tate said.
"You can't boil water."
"I resent that."
"You put the egg in before the butter," Judah said.
"I'm a linebacker, not a short-order cook."
Judah laughed so hard that he had to put his forehead on the table.
Tate scraped the pan into the sink and turned to look at him.
The bruise on his face was fading to brown and green.
His mouth was twitching at one corner, and for the first time it looked like the face of someone eighteen.
"Say it again," Tate said.
"Say what?" Judah asked.
"What you said when you put the tag on me."
Judah took off his glasses and folded them.
