Chapter 16: The Ledger
"She lied," Soren said.
He was staring at the empty shelf with his jaw tight.
"Or he moved it," I said.
"Same thing."
"Not to her."
We found Imogen in the glass breakfast room, alone, with a cup of tea she wasn't drinking.
She looked up and read both our faces in one second.
"It's gone," she said.
"It's gone."
All the color went out of her at once.
"I saw it. Three nights ago. I swear on my mother's grave, it was on that shelf."
"You'd swear on anything," Soren said.
"I'd swear on you," she said bitterly, and then looked as if she wished she hadn't.
I watched her hands.
They were shaking so badly that the cup rattled in the saucer.
"He knew you looked," I said.
"He can't have."
"He's your father."
She had no answer for that, and I think it was the first moment she understood what she had been to him.
