Chapter 24: The Door
I opened the door.
Soren stood in the grey corridor with a cup in each hand and his shirt buttoned wrong.
"I made it myself," he said. "I watched the water boil. Nobody else touched it."
I took the cup and breathed in.
Roasted bean, hot milk, nothing else.
"Taste it first," I said.
He did, with great solemnity, and handed it back.
"Now you," he said, and I drank.
It was terrible coffee.
I told him so, and he looked so offended that I laughed until I had to sit down on the bed.
He sat on the floor with his back against the frame and his long legs across my rug.
He drank his own terrible coffee and did not try to touch me.
"You knocked," I said.
"You said ask at the door."
"I did."
"So I'm asking."
He turned the cup in his hands.
"I don't want you to stay as the kept one, or the bound one, or the one who owes."
"I want you to stay as the woman who bolts her own door and opens it when she likes."
"That's very specific."
