Chapter 5: Rest Cure
Kenneth did not raise his voice in the car.
He never did.
"Who is he to you?"
"A stranger. He was being polite."
"He kissed your hand in front of two hundred people."
"You've kissed my hand in front of two thousand."
He glanced at me, and his face went warm and sad.
"You're overwhelmed," he said. "It's the hormones. And what you said today, darling, it was brave, but it was a lot."
"It was true."
"Of course it was true. And now everyone knows it, and they'll talk, and you will have to hear it."
He squeezed my fingers.
"The tracker says you spent Sunday night at the Meridian."
My blood stopped.
"I told you. The spa."
"The spa is ten blocks from the Meridian."
He said it so kindly that for a second I wanted to apologize.
"I'm not angry," he said. "I'm worried. A woman in your state, wandering the city at midnight, and now Quincy Crane at a charity lunch."
"He was being polite."
"He is a man who has hated me for twenty years."
He turned toward me, and his eyes were wet.
"I would never forgive myself if something happened to you. Or to our child."
I almost believed him.
That was the worst part.
His thumb was warm on my knuckles, and for five years I had believed it.
"I think you need a rest," he said.
My stomach turned over.
"A rest."
"The lake house. Two weeks, no phone, no luncheons, no men kissing your hand. Just you and the baby and the water. Lillian will bring the little one on weekends."
