Chapter 13: The Study
Aksel's POV
My father's house sits at the top of the bluff, a white farmhouse with a porch on three sides.
I let myself in at seven in the morning with my own key.
I had not slept.
I had walked from the bookstore to the boathouse and back, twice, with the time card inside my coat.
Thea had told me at the cage door to wait until I was calm.
I was not calm.
The kitchen was dark.
A light showed under the study door at the end of the hall, and I knew he would be sitting under it.
He had not slept in the bedroom upstairs since my mother died.
I pushed the door open.
My father sat behind the oak desk in yesterday's tweed jacket.
A cup of cold coffee stood at his elbow, and the ledger of the Transfer Scholars Fund lay open in front of him.
He looked up.
He took in my face, and then the card in my hand, and I watched the color leave his.
"Aksel," he said.
I crossed the study and laid the time card on the blotter with the pencil side up.
He did not pick it up.
His eyes went to the slanted S and the long-legged R, and they stayed there.
"Thirty-nine years ago," I said.
"Maren Solheim."
"Where did you get that?" he said.
His voice came out thin.
"Her daughter had it in a shoebox, under her grandmother's recipes," I said.
"Her daughter," my father said.
He closed his eyes.
"You've seen her."
"I've done more than see her," I said.
"I hounded her for two weeks on Aunt Ragna's say-so.
