Chapter 7: The Math

Aksel's POV

I was on the water by five.

I had left her asleep in the loft with my jacket over her shoulders and a note on the lamp that said only, *Back by seven.*

I did not know what else a man wrote.

The Vermillion was black and smooth, with a skin of mist on it, and the single scull slid out from the boathouse dock without a sound.

I rowed upstream under the bluff, with the oars dipping and the bow of the shell pointing at nothing.

I did not think.

That was the point of rowing.

I had done it every dawn since I was sixteen, because it was the only hour when my head went quiet.

It would not go quiet today.

Six weeks.

She had said six weeks.

I took the stroke, and the shell ran.

Three weeks and two days ago, on the rock above this water, a girl in a wool coat had held my hand against her cheek in the dark.

I had told her I could not sleep, and she had said she couldn't either.

We had talked about cows.

She made me laugh, which no one had done in years, and then she pulled me down into the grass.

I never saw her face clearly.

There was no moon, and I had my hood up, because I always did.

A hood was a wall.

I went back the next night, and the one after.

Nobody came.

I did the sum again, with the oars going.

It did not come out any other way.

I stopped rowing and let the shell drift, and the mist moved around me.
