Chapter 11: Madison
"Wrists," I said, and held out the roll of white hockey tape.
Hugo lay on the hotel bed in Madison in nothing but his boxers, with his arms stretched up over his head.
He looked at the tape.
We had won Game 3 at their place, two to one.
The crowd had chanted at him for sixty minutes, a word I won't repeat.
He had skated through it with his chin up and a strip of tape over the bite on his neck.
Now it was one in the morning, the curtains were drawn, and no one on earth could knock on our door.
"You asked for this," I said.
"I did."
"Say it again."
"Tape my wrists, Vera."
I wound it around the left one, firm and flat, and then the right.
I anchored both to the slats of the headboard with long strips that crackled in the quiet.
His chest rose and fell.
I tugged once.
"Can you move?"
"No."
"Good."
I stood at the foot of the bed and took off my robe.
Under it I had nothing but my glasses.
His eyes went over me slowly, hungry and helpless, and the muscles in his forearms flexed against the tape.
"Don't stop looking," I said.
"I couldn't."
I climbed onto the bed and knelt astride his hips.
I leaned over him until my breasts hung just above his face.
He lifted his head off the pillow to reach them.
I pulled back an inch.
"Ah. No."
He groaned and dropped his head.
"Vera."
"You told me what you wanted in the truck. You told me in the shower. You told me in the dark." I traced the roll of tape down his breastbone. "Tell me again."
"I want to taste you. I want to put my hands on your waist. I want to feel you move."
"Which one first?"
"The taste."
"Good answer."
I let one nipple brush his lips.
He took it greedily, sucking and licking, and I let him have three breaths of it before I took it away.
