Chapter 12: The Hit
"Pull him," I said.
The coach didn't turn his head.
He stood at the end of the bench with a headset pressed to one ear and his mustache twitching.
"He just swayed. Pull him."
"I can't." He took the headset off, and his eyes were wretched. "It's Hedberg. He says the doctor reviewed the tape. He says leave him in."
Kasper had taken a knee to the helmet in Game 4.
I had written NOT FIT on my sheet, and the doctor had signed over it in the hall.
Now it was the third period of Game 5 in Madison, and I could see it from the bench.
The doctor sat at the end of the row in his blazer, calmly watching play, his gold watch glinting on his folded hands.
"Look at his feet," I shouted over the roar.
He didn't.
On the ice, Kasper stood in the crease with his stick lowered.
His head was tilted at a strange angle.
Hugo stood in front of him with his back to the boards, watching Kasper's mask, not the puck.
I knew that look.
I'd seen it on my own face in a mirror.
