On Monday the owner made me head of medicine, in front of the whole team, with a contract that said I could bench anyone.
I read the line twice.
"Anyone?" I said.
"The captain too."
"I'll use it."
"I'd be disappointed if you didn't."
Hugo stood at the back of the room with his arms folded, and the whole dressing room turned to look at him.
He took a step forward.
"I'd like to say something."
The coach looked up.
"The C goes to the alternate captain," Hugo said. "He's been carrying this room for two years while I was carrying a secret. He earned it."
Nobody spoke.
