Chapter 10: The Island
Eleanor's sunroom smelled like lemon and old books.
She poured the tea herself, with a hand that did not shake.
A plate of shortbread sat between us on a glass table, and she pushed it across.
"Eat," she said.
I ate.
She watched me do it with the satisfaction of a woman at a cooking show.
"Eleven years," she said. "That's how long my grandson has lived on coffee and spreadsheets. I used to send soup to his office. He gave it to the guards."
"He eats at home now."
"I noticed. Your mother's cabbage, I hear."
"Word travels."
"I'm eighty-one. I have nothing but time and a telephone."
She stirred her tea.
"You gave back sixty thousand dollars," she said. "In front of nine men."
"It wasn't mine."
"It was yours. You signed for it."
"Then I changed my mind."
"What's your price now?"
"I don't have one."
"Everyone has one."
"Then it's something I can't buy," I said. "I want your grandson to be okay. That's all."
She looked at me for so long that I put down the shortbread.
