Chapter 22: The Ring She Picked

The jeweler was an old man in a cardigan who didn't blink when Declan said, "She's choosing."

He laid out four velvet trays on the counter.

I looked at the first and put my hands behind my back.

"What's wrong?" Declan asked.

"These are all the size you'd buy for a woman who has to impress your family."

"I don't need you to impress my family."

"Then I don't need a rock the size of a grape."

The old man smiled at the counter.

I went along the trays slowly.

In the fourth tray there was a thick gold band with a small green stone set low in it.

It was the color of my emerald wrap dress.

I picked it up.

It was warm from the lamp.

"This one," I said.

"That's the cheapest one in the case," Declan said.

"That's why."

"Winnie."

"It's the one I'd pick if nobody were watching," I said. "It's the one I'll wear washing dishes. It's mine."

He looked at it for a long time.

"Put it in a box," he said to the jeweler. "I'll carry it myself."

We drove to Northeast Philly on Saturday morning.

I expected my street to look the same.

It didn't.

A hundred feet from my mother's house, the road was full of pickup trucks and a flatbed stacked with shingles.

On the roof of her rowhouse, in the sun, were twelve dockworkers in reflective vests, hammering.
