Chapter 16: Gate Twenty-Three

Becca drove.

"There's a sweater on the back seat," she said. "And jeans, and boots, and a granola bar I found in your desk. Change. You can't board in a ball gown."

"I can board in anything I want."

"You can board in a ball gown if you want to be on the news, and tonight I think you've done enough news."

I wriggled out of fifty-year-old velvet in the back of a hatchback on the Mass Pike.

Becca kept her eyes on the road and narrated.

"Eight minutes ago a man posted a video of Stanford Merrow trying to leave a ballroom. Four hundred people stood in a line in front of the door."

"They did not."

"Okay, it was six men. They stood very firmly."

I laughed, and then I was crying, and she handed me a napkin from the glovebox without looking.

"Tell me when you want me to stop being funny," she said.

"Not yet."

The airport board showed my flight with a red word beside it.

DELAYED. The rain had backed up the runways, and my plane would leave at ten past one.

Becca read it twice.

"You have two hours," she said. "Do you want a drink, a good cry or a plan?"

"I want to check in."

I checked in.

I handed over the passport that had spent weeks inside a gym bag in a locker, and the agent, who had seen a great many bad nights, stamped it without a word.
