Chapter 7: What He Signed

"It's upstairs in my bag," I said. "I'll bring it."

"Sit," Stanford said sharply. "This is a family dinner. We are not conducting business at the table."

"You can send a servant," said Agnes, "or you can let her walk up the stairs. She's a grown woman."

I went up and came down with the blue folder.

Nobody had spoken while I was gone.

Vanessa sat with a glass of water she had not touched. Stanford stared at the tablecloth.

I put the folder in front of Dalton.

He opened it.

He read the first page slowly, one line at a time, his lips almost moving.

I watched his eyes go down to the bottom and stop.

His signature was there, black and sharp.

Below it, a second line said the date.

He turned the page and read the next one, and the next.

When he reached the last page he went back to the first, as if one of them might have changed while he was not looking.

"This is a petition for divorce," he said.

"Yes."

"I signed it."

"Yes."

"On Monday. In my office."

"While you were busy," I said.

There was no anger in it. I only said it so that he knew I remembered.

Vanessa put down her glass.

"Dalton, you can't be held to a signature you gave while you were distracted," she said smoothly. "Any lawyer would say so. She tricked you. She slid it across your desk disguised as a school form."

"It was a school form," I said. "I told him it was a lab waiver, and he didn't read it. I never asked him to look away."
