Chapter 8: The Grant

Becca called at ten past seven the next morning, and she was crying.

"The freezers are on backup power. The building's finance office locked our accounts at midnight. A man just told me the foundation has put everything on hold, and the postdoc's salary stops today."

"I'm coming."

"Linnea, the cell lines. If the cold room loses the contract, the vendor stops delivering. Six years of samples."

"I know. I'm coming."

I put on the grey dress from last night because it was the first thing my hand found.

Then I took the train to Merrow Tower.

I had been inside the executive floor three times in four years.

Today I did not stop at the front desk.

I walked past a receptionist who said "Mrs. Merrow, wait," and a security guard who stepped aside because he was not sure he was allowed to touch me.

The boardroom doors were glass.

Through them I could see a long table, a dozen people in dark suits, and Stanford at the head with a screen glowing behind him.

Dalton sat at his father's right hand, reading from a tablet.

I pushed the doors open.

Every head turned.

"I'm sorry to interrupt," I said, and my voice came out clear. "I'm Linnea Voight. I run the cardiac regeneration lab that the Merrow Foundation funds. I'd like three minutes."

"This is a private meeting," Stanford said.

"It's a public foundation," said a woman at the far end, who had a pen in her hand and the expression of someone enjoying herself. "Three minutes, Stanford."

Stanford shut his mouth.

I did not look at Dalton.

I looked at the board.
