Chapter 18: The Night Before
The brush slipped out of my fingers for the third time and rolled under the table.
It was eleven o'clock on the night before the gala, and my hands would not hold anything.
Scott picked it up and set it on the palette.
"You can't paint like this," he said.
"I can't stand there tomorrow and shake."
"You won't shake."
"I shook just now."
"You shook in a room with nothing in it but me."
He stood behind me with his hands on my shoulders.
On the floor lay the canvas Blair had cut, four flaps of blue and brick curling back from the stretcher.
I had hung nine paintings on the gala wall on Saturday with my own two hands.
I had touched every sill and every window and felt each one look at me.
Now I couldn't hold a brush.
"Three hundred people," I said. "And she's been waiting seven years, Scott, and I've been waiting seven years, and what if the paint doesn't come?"
"Then it doesn't come."
"That isn't helping."
"I'm not trying to help."
He turned me around.
His gray eyes were very steady.
