The stall was lit orange against the dark river.
Tae-seong sat alone on the end stool.
There was a full cup of broth beside his, cold, with a pale pink lipstick mark on the rim.
"She left," he said, before I could ask. "Four minutes ago."
"She's been here twenty."
"Twelve." He looked at the cup. "I'm telling you at once, because that is the rule."
"Tell me."
The ajumma, at her pot, became very busy with a ladle.
"Da-eun knows the banquet," Tae-seong said.
"She says Madam Ahn and the Chairman mean to run the first life again, in one evening."
"A theft, a lover, a leak."
My stomach turned over.
"The lover is me," he said. "That's why Table 40."
"What does she want for it?"
"She'll give us the whole script. Every step, in order." He pushed the cup an inch away.
"In exchange, when the two years end, you take me and go. Far."
"She keeps the chair, and the house, and she never hears our names again."
