Chapter 20: Seventy
Six hundred people came to the Chairman's seventieth birthday, and every one of them looked at me as I entered.
The chandeliers were lit.
The marble floor held the whole room twice, once above and once below.
I wore the gray-blue silk that Halmoni had chosen herself, with my mother's white collar sewn on the inside where only I would feel it.
Seung-hwan walked at my left, in black.
He offered his arm in the doorway, and I took it, and the flashes went off together.
"Smile," he murmured.
"I'm smiling."
"You look ready to testify," he said.
"I am about to be exact."
His mouth moved, a very small thing.
At the coat check, a hand brushed mine.
I knew it without looking.
Tae-seong stood at the end of the counter in his dark suit, with his tie straight and his hair, for once, combed flat.
He was handing over a coat that was not his own.
It was a long red wool coat with brass buttons.
The woman beside him wore the most formal hanbok I had ever seen on a street vendor.
