Chapter 4: Wes
Weston drove Gretchen home with the cut sleeve folded over her arm.
She cried the whole way. He let her.
At her gate she put a hand on his wrist. "You believe me, don't you, Wes?"
"Go inside," he said.
He watched her walk up the path, and he sat in the car for a long time after the porch light went off.
He had known Gretchen since he was nine.
Her father had put money into Schermerhorn Shipping the year Weston's father died, when Weston was twenty-two and the bank was calling every morning.
Weston had been paying that debt with his silence ever since.
He had never weighed the price.
He weighed it now.
At eleven he let himself into his study and opened the safe.
Albie's adoption folder was where it had always been, under the deed to the house.
He had signed it five years ago without reading past the first page. His mother had said the agency was discreet, and Eliza had been in a hospital bed, and he had been tired of the sound of his own house.
He read it now.
The agency's name was printed at the top. There was a phone number and a street address in Stamford.
He dialed the number.
A recorded voice told him the line had been disconnected.
He looked up the address on his phone.
It was not an agency. It was a private obstetrics clinic, closed three years ago. The owner of record was Gretchen's cousin.
Weston set the phone down on the desk.
Whoever Gretchen had meant by gave, the one person who would know was down the hall.
He walked down the hall and knocked on his mother's door.
