Chapter 11: The Old Woman
I showed Anselm the text at breakfast.
He read it standing by the espresso machine, with the sun on his face and one hand flat on the counter.
He laughed once, without any humor in it at all.
"He wants a show," he said.
"He wants me to prove it."
"He wants a room full of Alphas watching a woman order me onto my knees." He set the phone down very gently. "I won't kneel for anyone. But if you tell me to, in that voice, I won't have a choice, and Gunnar knows it."
"Who told him?"
"I'm working on it."
"Your mother," I said.
He didn't say yes.
He looked out over the lake, and his jaw worked.
"I'm working on it," he said again.
That night I went to work with the text in my pocket.
The first thing the night nurse said was, "Room Six has been asking for you since four."
The old woman was awake.
She lay propped on three pillows in the lamp-lit room, her white hair in a thin braid over one shoulder.
Her hands were curled on the blanket, and she had gone smaller since spring.
Her eyes were still sharp as pins.
"Girl," she said. "Shut the door."
I shut it.
"Sit. Closer. No, the other side, where I can see you."
I sat.
She looked at my belly.
She looked at it for a long time, and then she put out one thin hand and laid it on the curve of me.
"Four months," she said. "A girl."
"Everyone keeps telling me that."
"Because it's true." She smiled. "Who's the father?"
I hesitated.
She was a patient, ninety-one years old, with maybe a week left.
"Anselm Strandberg," I said.
"Ah." She nodded slowly. "Hedda's boy. Torsten's boy. The big one with the temper."
"You knew his father?"
"I sat on the pack mothers' bench with his mother for twenty years." Her fingers tightened. "Has he sat down yet?"
