Chapter 22: Ida

The guest cabin at Cedar Hall had a woodstove, a narrow bed and one window onto the black firs.

By midnight it held a dozen people who all believed they were in charge.

"Out," said the midwife from North Bend, to the room generally.

She was a square little woman in a flannel shirt with her sleeves pushed up.

She had delivered nine hundred pups.

She had never, she told us, delivered one in front of an Alpha, a Speaker and a human nurse in pink Crocs.

"The father waits outside," she said. "It's pack custom. He walks, he drinks tea, he comes in when it's done."

"No," I said.

I was on my hands and knees on the bed with my forehead on a pillow, between pains, and I said it into the pillow.

"Pack custom, dear," said the midwife.

"No," I said.

"He'll only get in the way."

"Anselm," I said. "Come here. Hold my hand."

I said it in the voice.

I felt it go out of me, strong and certain and true.

I heard him cross the floor behind me in two strides and take my hand.

He knelt by the bed and I crushed his fingers in mine.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said.

"I know."

"I was going to fight her."
