Chapter 23: Six Weeks
It snowed in Ballard on the first Sunday of December, an inch of wet white on the blue door.
Hedda Strandberg stood on my porch at two o'clock exactly with a bag of tiny knitted socks.
I opened the door a hand's width.
She wore her navy coat and her pearls, and she had lost weight.
She was holding the bag in front of her with both hands.
"I've come at the hour you set," she said.
"You have."
"May I see her?"
I looked at her for a long time.
Behind me, in the warm front room, Ida was awake in her cradle.
She kicked at a mobile of felt wolves that Wynne had hung from the lamp.
Anselm was sitting on my sofa with his shoes off, very quiet.
He had not looked toward the door.
I had asked him not to.
"One hour," I said. "On the porch step. I'm here. Wynne's in the doorway. You don't go inside, you don't take her off the step, and you don't say one word about the Hall."
"Agreed."
"You can come on the first Sunday of every month until I say otherwise. I might say otherwise."
"That is more than I deserve," Hedda said.
"Yes," I said.
I went in, lifted my daughter out of the cradle, and carried her to the door.
I put her in Hedda's arms myself.
I watched my daughter's grandmother take the weight of her, a small hot bundle in a pink knitted cap, and look down.
Ida looked up.
Her grey-green eyes fixed on the silver-haired woman's face with the grave attention she gave everyone.
Hedda's mouth worked.
"She has your mother's eyes," she said, very low.
"She does."
"I'm sorry," Hedda said.
She didn't say for what.
