The result came at four minutes past six on Thursday morning.
I was alone in the control house with the lake going pink at the edge and my coffee steaming on the console.
My phone buzzed once on the desk.
The subject line said, "Your results are ready."
I did not open it at once.
For a week I had not let myself think about it, and I had not been alone for any of the week.
Mats had driven me to the lab the next morning and held the door.
He had let a technician swab the inside of his cheek, and he had said, "Thank you," to her twice.
He had slept at my place four nights out of seven and made the bed each morning with the corners squared.
On Tuesday he had brought a book of baby names, and put it on my kitchen table, and said nothing about it.
