Chapter 24: Hot Water
The steam rolled over us in a slow hot wave, and Mats kissed the soft round of my stomach and did not hurry.
I lay on my back on the broad lower bench of Mummo's sauna with my braid hanging off the edge.
The stove ticked, and the cedar glowed amber in the lamp, and the small window was black.
It was the last Saturday in September, and nobody in the house but us.
His mouth moved across my belly, over the loose new skin and the silver lines I had stopped hiding.
He kissed each one, and I let him.
"Still the best thing I've ever seen," he said, against my hip. "Still mine to look at."
"It's different now."
"It's more."
He turned his head and bit the soft inside of my thigh, gently, and I gasped.
"Eight weeks," he said.
"Eight weeks and a day," I said. "The doctor said I'm cleared. I've been counting since the hospital."
"So have I."
"Then stop counting, Captain."
He laughed and slid up the bench, and kissed me, a deep slow kiss, and his hand cupped my breast and thumbed the nipple.
It was heavy and tender in his palm, and a thread of heat ran through me.
He kissed his way down again, past my navel, and parted my knees with both hands.
He stopped with his mouth at the crease of my thigh and breathed in.
"I have missed you," he said, low. "Every inch."
"I'm right here."
"I know. I'm making up for lost weeks."
His tongue touched me once, lightly, and I arched off the bench.
I put my hand in his hair and held his head where it was, just for a moment.
Then I made myself let go.
"Lie here," I said, and sat up. "On your back. I want to do something new."
He lay down at once.
The bench was wide enough for a man of six feet three, if his feet hung off the end.
I climbed over him and turned, and knelt with my knees either side of his head and my face above his hips.
He understood a moment after I did.
"Liisa," he said, in a rough voice below me.
"Sixty-nine," I said. "I've been wanting it since March."
"God. Yes."
