I slid the envelope back across the chrome without opening it.
"Tell him no."
"He said you'd say that."
"Then he can stop sending you to hear it."
The beta stood there a second longer.
"My boys ask for your rolls," he said. "Every Sunday. The new cook buys them in bags."
He left before I could answer.
The waitress took a marker and wrote on the butcher paper, beside Iron Ridge.
Sulking.
Hatty came home on Monday, October 12, at noon.
Abel drove her up the pass in his truck at fifteen miles an hour, with a pillow behind her back and Ruthie in the middle seat telling her about the tooth in the roll.
The crew was lined up on the lot.
The truckers at the counter stood up.
The night cook had stayed awake past his bedtime and was wearing a clean shirt.
Hatty got out slow.
She was thinner, and paler, with a pink scar showing at the neck of her blouse.
She looked up at the neon cup, steady and bright.
She looked at the white walls and the cherry trim.
