Chapter 17: Hunter's Moon

"I don't know yet."
He turned and walked out.

Neither of them said a word.

"You drew it. You carry it."
She put it inside her shirt, against her skin, and kept her hand over it.
I started the stew at three in the morning.
Three hundred pounds of elk shoulder, browned in batches on the flat-top until the whole diner smelled like a hunting camp.
Thirty gallons of stock.
The garden pack's potatoes and onions and carrots.
Twelve hotel pans of brown butter rolls, with forty jars of chokecherry jelly lined up on the counter.
Forty huckleberry pies cooling on every flat surface we had, including the top of the jukebox.
At six-forty, Ruthie came in and ate her pancakes standing up because every stool had a pie on it.
