Chapter 21: Snowed In
For a second the whole diner was black.
Forty people breathed in.
Then the blue flames of the flat-top showed under the hood, steady, because the range ran on gas and the gas line was the one Abel mended in October.
"Grill's still hot," I said, loud. "Nobody panic. Pancakes in ten."
Somebody on the church bus laughed.
The night cook was already lighting the hurricane lamps Hatty kept in the storeroom for exactly this.
The waitress went down the booths with a flashlight in her teeth, counting heads.
Hatty sat on her stool by the register with a cashbox on her knees and a blanket around her shoulders.
"Pie's free tonight," she announced. "Coffee's free. Complaints are five dollars."
At eight the bell rang.
A man came in out of the snow, white to the knees, with a tarp-wrapped bundle on his shoulder.
He set it down by the door and pulled his hood back.
Cordell.
The diner went quiet.
The hill wolves at the counter sat up.
