Chapter 6: Forty Seconds
On Tuesday I went back to work, because twenty-six eight-year-olds had not done anything wrong.
At three thirty the last child left, and my parents were standing in my classroom doorway.
Mom wore her church coat, and Dad held his cap in both hands.
"We need to talk to you," Mom said. "Please, Ginny."
I stayed behind my desk with the red marker still in my hand.
"You swore I was violent to a judge," I said. "Talk."
"We were frightened for Livia," Dad said to the floor. "You don't understand what it's like to watch her."
"Then tell me what it's like."
"Drop the statement to the Army," Mom said. "Tell that agent it was a misunderstanding. Ansel will apologize for the coffee, and he'll never go near you again."
"The coffee."
"A sleeping pill, Ginny. A mistake."
I put the marker down.
"Mom, you just told me he gave me the pill."
Her mouth stopped moving.
"I didn't say that."
"You did. You said Ansel will apologize for the coffee." I stood up. "Livia says I pushed her down the cellar stairs when she was eight."
"You did," Mom said at once.
"We lived in the second-floor apartment in Stuttgart then. There was no cellar, and there were no stairs except the ones to the street."
Dad shut his eyes.
Mom's face went through three expressions, and she settled on the angriest one.
"You were a child, and we forgave you. We have never held it over you. Livia needs us, and you are always so strong."
