Chapter 19: The Night Before
Upper Room Three had not changed.
It had the same low table, the same couch by the window, the same pear-wood smell, and the same lamp with its crooked shade.
Madam Hui's tea-girl had put them there and gone, with a pot of tea on the table and her eyes on the floor.
It was the eve of the Lantern Festival.
Outside, the whole city was hanging out paper lanterns, and the canal glowed red and gold down to the bridge.
They had spent the day copying the Dead Record in Shouzhi's father's hand, three times, into three different places.
Now the work was done.
There was nothing left to do but wait for morning, and neither of them was any good at waiting.
Qinghe took the iron cuffs off the table.
He held them in one hand, easily, and looked at Shouzhi over them.
"Tonight," he said, "you do as you're told."
Shouzhi's mouth went dry.
"All of it," said Qinghe. "I don't want to hear a word of the Doors' Code in this room. Take your clothes off."
Shouzhi took them off.
He folded his coat on the couch, out of habit.
Qinghe made a small sound at that, and Shouzhi felt himself go red from the neck down.
When Shouzhi was bare, Qinghe walked once around him, slowly, with the cuffs hanging from his finger.
"Hands behind you."
Shouzhi put them there.
The iron closed on his wrists with a click he felt in his spine.
"Good," Qinghe said. "That's good. On the couch. Knees up on the cushion, forehead down."
