Chapter 14: The Debt

Rosalind Dacre stood in the corridor outside Lucan's door in a plain gray cloak with the hood up.

She had no ladies with her and no fan.

Without the pale blue silk she looked like a tall, frightened girl.

"Not here," I said. "Walk with me."

Lucan caught my wrist at the door.

"I'll come."

"No. She asked for me alone, and she's shaking."

"Tilda."

"I have your ring around my neck. Let me go and get what I came for."

He let go, slowly, and I took Rosalind down the back stairs to the kitchens.

The ovens were banked for the night, and the big room smelled of yeast and woodsmoke.

I lit one lamp and pointed at the stool by the prep table.

"Sit."

She sat.

I took the bread pudding from the cold shelf and cut a thick square.

I set it in front of her with a spoon.

"I didn't come to eat," she said.

"When did you last?"

She opened her mouth to say something proud.

Then her stomach growled loudly in the quiet kitchen, and her face went scarlet.

"Yesterday," she said. "Breakfast. I can't keep anything down at the Chancellor's table."

"Eat."

She picked up the spoon with a hand that trembled so hard it rattled on the dish.

She ate the pudding.

When she looked up her eyes were full.
