Chapter 7: The Queen's Tea

The Queen Mother's sitting room was cold.

There was a fire in the grate, but the cold came from the woman by the window.

Queen Ottoline Ardenne was fifty-seven, tall and straight, with silver hair braided into a crown.

She carried a cane she leaned on only when someone was looking.

She did not turn around when I came in.

"Sit," she said.

I sat on a hard chair in the middle of the carpet.

A servant poured tea and left.

The queen turned at last.

Her eyes were gray, exactly like her son's, and they went over me from my short curls to my shoes without a flicker.

"You are smaller than you looked in the hall," she said.

"I'm a size 18, Your Majesty. The hall is very large."

Her mouth did not move.

"Do you know why I sent for you?"

"No, Your Majesty."

"To tell you that my son will tire of you."

I held my cup very steady.

"He is a man who wants what he cannot have," the queen said.

"He wanted a horse once he was forbidden to ride it. He wanted a ship."
