Chapter 8: The Lodge
The hunting lodge at Marren Lake was made of black timber and glass.
It stood alone on a ridge above the water.
The Chancellor had sent nobody to meet us but a caretaker with a lantern.
"Where is Lord Gresham?" Lucan asked.
"Not expected, my lord."
"Then who invited us?"
"I only keep the fires, my lord."
Lucan looked at me.
I looked at the empty lodge, the roaring hearth, the single enormous bed in the loft above.
"Maybe it's just a trap with no teeth," I said.
"Maybe it's a gift."
"From Gresham?"
"From the universe. Two nights, a lake, and a door I can lock."
He locked it.
I stood in the middle of the great room in my traveling cloak with a smile I couldn't stop.
It was a clear cold night, and the logs popped.
He took the cloak from my shoulders and hung it on a peg.
"I want to ask you something," I said.
"Anything."
"You've been so careful with me."
"Careful?"
"Gentle. Slow. Like I might break." I took a breath. "I don't. I want more."
