Chapter 14: The Seal

They met in the map room at dusk, with the door barred and the herald still drinking tea.

Gwang-ho sat on the edge of a stool.

Bong-sun stood by the wall with her arms folded and her chin up.

"I knew the moment I saw the painting," Gwang-ho said quietly, "and I wish I hadn't."

"I've known her since she was nine," said Bong-sun. "I'm not the one who needed telling."

"I'm a quartermaster. I count things."

"Good jade, soft hands, a woman who fixes a map in one look. I didn't want to add it up."

Do-gyeom sat on the map table with his arms crossed and his wedding coat open.

He had not taken his eyes off Ha-rin since they came in.

"Strategist," he said. "Your plan."

She set both hands flat on the war map.

Her voice came out steady.

"Daeyeon's law says a crown princess may give the royal seal back in front of three witnesses and leave the palace."

"Nobody does it, because it means shame."

"Shame for who?"

"For her. And for the Prince, because the law says why she left is entered in the record. I can read the reasons aloud."

Gwang-ho blinked.

"You want to give it back."

"I have it. It was sewn in the hem of Bong-sun's bundle, because I would not leave it on the Consort's lap."
