Chapter 15: Your Highness
The rider came to the south gate within the hour.
He carried a lacquered tube and the Crown Prince's compliments, and Gwang-ho read the message aloud through the door.
"Parley on the open ground at noon tomorrow. Six guards a side. The Prince will speak with whoever claims to wear the face."
"Tell him he'll have her," said Do-gyeom.
He shot the bolt on the room above the gate, shut the shutters against the dusk, and turned around.
Ha-rin stood in the middle of the floor in the half-undone gold robe.
She had not moved since the window.
"I can't do it," she said. "Tomorrow. I'll walk out there and look at his face, and I'll be twenty again, pouring his tea."
"You won't."
"I don't know how to be her any more. The one in the painting."
"You're her now."
"I'm not."
"Then be her for me."
He lifted the heavy oak chair from beside the window and set it in the middle of the room.
It was the chair Gwang-ho had carved from a barn beam for the king to sit in at council, wide and high-backed, with arms.
Do-gyeom had never once sat in it.
"Sit," he said.
She looked at him.
"Sit, Your Highness."
The title again.
Her knees went soft.
She crossed the floor with the hem whispering on the boards.
She turned, and lowered herself into the chair with her spine straight and her hands on the arms.
It was the way she had sat through six years of banquets.
The gold robe spread out around her.
Do-gyeom stood in front of her.
He looked at her, and then he did something she did not expect.
He went down on both knees on the floor.
He laid his hands on the boards on either side of her feet, bowed his head, and held there.
