Chapter 17: Sixty-Nine
He did not mention what the Prince had said.
He walked her back through the south gate with his hand at her spine, and up the stairs, and through the long corridor.
When they reached the room above the north gate he shut the door and stood there.
The lamp was lit.
The gold robe lay where she dropped it, in a heap on the floor.
She stood in her white underlayer with the crown pin in her hand.
"He'll attack before dawn," she said.
"Three days, he said."
"He needs me back before I say anything in front of his generals. He knows I saw through his positioning. He won't wait."
"Then the gorge."
"The gorge. Gwang-ho has the logs and the oil. The riders are in the pines at the narrow bend. All of it is ready."
"Then you've done your part."
"I have."
"Then come here."
She came to him.
He took the pin out of her fingers and set it on the shelf, and then he put both hands on either side of her face.
"I heard him," he said.
"I know."
"I want you to hear me."
"I'm listening."
"I don't care what he said. If it's true, I don't care. I married you, Strategist. Not an heir."
Her throat closed.
"It isn't true," she said. "I don't think. I've never tried.
He was in my bed a few times and nothing came, and he said it was me, and I believed him for five years."
"He's a fool."
"He's a fool."
"Come here," Do-gyeom said, much lower.
She went up on her toes and kissed him.
When she pulled back, her blood was racing and her fear had gone small and far away.
"Tonight is mine," she said. "Take off your clothes."
"Yes, Strategist."
He undressed standing in the lamplight.
