Chapter 15: The Recording
The guards brought Rawlins to the middle of the floor.
He stood where my chair had been.
Then he found Celia in the front row and winked at her.
"Morning, C," he said.
The whole hall heard it.
"Who is this man?" Elder Pemberton asked.
"Judd Rawlins," Rhett said. "He leads the Tennessee rogues. Wednesday night he tried to kill Mireya on Pecan Street. Thursday morning, somebody let him out of my cells."
On the Ironclaw side, Marcus had gone the color of chalk.
"He's a rogue," Celia said. "He'll say anything for a deal."
"I will," Rawlins agreed. "That's why I brought receipts."
Rhett took the old black phone out of his pocket.
He walked it to the council table and set it in front of Elder Pemberton.
"Two calls," Rhett said. "The first one is three years old. October. The night before the Harvest Moon."
Elder Pemberton looked at the phone.
Then at Celia.
Then she pressed play.
The speaker crackled.
A man's voice. Rawlins's.
"You want it done tomorrow night?"
Then a woman's.
Bright. Impatient. Known to every wolf in that room.
