Chapter 4: The Banquet

He walked off down Pecan Street whistling.

I stood by the porch swing until his shape was gone.

Then I went inside, locked the door, and sat on the kitchen floor with my back against the cabinets until the sun came up.

Sable, I thought. Please.

Nothing.

Rhett came by the shop at noon on Tuesday.

The front window was plywood now. Somebody had spray-painted a heart on it.

"The banquet's tonight," he said. "Opening of the summit. Every pack in the Southern Alliance, plus Ironclaw."

"I know."

"Come as my guest."

I set a cup down too hard.

"Rhett, the whole point is that he goes home Saturday and I stay invisible."

"You're not invisible anymore. He made sure of that yesterday." He leaned on the counter. "If you hide, he gets to tell the story. If you sit at my table, every alpha in that room knows you're under my protection."

Mae poked her head out of the back.

"She'll need a dress," she said. "I'll fetch the blue one."

The old Callahan lodge sat at the end of a gravel road lined with oaks.

Every window was lit.

Two hundred wolves in their best clothes stood in the great hall under strings of lights.

Mae's blue dress had a high neck. She'd pinned it herself.

Rhett wore a dark suit that didn't quite fit his shoulders.

He held out his arm.

I took it.

The room noticed.

Heads turned all along the tables.

A woman from the Pine Hollow pack whispered behind her hand.

"Is that the coffee girl?"

Rhett walked me to the head table.

He pulled out the chair on his right.
