Chapter 19: Gran's Question
After close the bakery kitchen was warm as a held breath.
The big deck oven still ticked and glowed from the day, and the whole room smelled of rye and caramelized sugar.
Gran Lu sat on a flour stool in the middle of the floor with a mug of tea.
Her reading glasses were pushed up in her curls.
She had been waiting.
Griffin stood in the doorway to the shop with his hands in his pockets.
She looked him over.
"Not you," she said.
"Out front, young man.
"Wash the cases."
"Yes, ma'am."
He went without a word.
I heard him run the water in the shop, and a rag squeak against glass.
Gran patted the stool next to hers.
I sat.
"I'm going to ask you one thing," she said, "and I want a plain answer."
"All right."
"I've been feeding that boy for six weeks.
"I've watched him carry your trays and wait on your word.
I've watched him stand in a corner of my kitchen, because he thinks he's in the way.
"He is the most powerful man in this town, and he looks at you like you're the weather."
"Gran."
"Do you mean to keep him?"
I opened my mouth.
She raised a finger.
"Not what you will say at that Gathering.
"Not what you owe the pack, or what the pack owes you.
"What you want, Etta."
The oven ticked.
Out front, the rag stopped squeaking, and I knew he could hear.
He could hear everything.
He was a wolf.
"Yes," I said.
My voice shook.
"I keep him.
"I want him in my kitchen at four in the morning and at your table on Sundays.
I want him in my bed every night until I'm a hundred.
